Many people choose to get a tummy tuck done in Chicago each year, but what is actually being done? A tummy tuck is an entirely different procedure from something like liposuction where fat cells are broken down and removed. Let’s take a look at the basic process of a tummy tuck and what you should expect from one.
Minor Tummy Tucks
There are two types of tummy tucks available for patients. The first is a partial abdominoplasty. This is for patients who only want a small amount of fat removed, not large amounts of fat and skin. In this procedure, the surgeon will make a small incision towards the bottom of the patient’s abdomen and then remove fat deposits thought the incision.
Complete Abdominoplasty
When a patient has excess fat and skin to be removed, they may opt to have a complete abdominoplasty. In this procedure, the surgeon will make a large incision from one side of the abdomen to the other right around where the pubic hair starts. Working with this incision the surgeon is then able to remove fat, skin, and other tissue as needed to contour the abdomen to the desired shape. During this procedure, the patient’s belly button will have to be moved. This is because with the removable of an excess amount of fat and skin it would no longer be in the right place, or could even be removed completely. To compensate for this, the surgeon will relocate it to the proper position after the tummy tuck is complete.
During a complete abdominoplasty, the surgeon will place drainage tubes into the patient’s abdomen. This is to allow the surgical wounds to drain as they heal and prevent fluid buildup and infection. These tubes will usually be removed within a few days, but it will be up to your surgeon to decide how long to leave them in for.
After the procedure, you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first night at least. Your recovery time will vary depending on the type of tummy tuck done and how fast you heal. Your surgeons should give you a timeline for returning to your normal life, but a general rule of thumb is to take it easy for 4-6 weeks after surgery to heal.
