What Is Sjogren’s Disease, and What Tests Are Available?

by | Oct 17, 2023 | Health

Sjogren’s syndrome, often referred to as Sjogren’s Disease, is a long-lasting autoimmune disorder. It happens when the body’s immune system attacks the glands in the mouth, eyes, and other areas of the body.

Primarily, the symptoms include a dry mouth and eyes, but people often report muscle and joint pain, as well as fatigue. Likewise, the disease could damage the kidneys, lungs, and nervous system.

Who Generally Gets Sjogren’s Disease?

Women are often the ones who get Sjogren’s syndrome. It can happen at any age, but it tends to affect those in their 40s and 50s, regardless of ethnicity or race.

Two Types of Sjogren’s Disease

Doctors tend to divide the syndrome into two different categories:

  • Secondary – If you have other rheumatic diseases, including polymyositis, scleroderma, system lupus erythematosus, or rheumatoid arthritis, you’re in this category.
  • Primary – If you have no other rheumatic disease, you’ve got this form.

Symptoms

Sjogren’s Disease can have many symptoms, which vary between individuals. Classically, the symptoms include:

  • Dry Mouth – Your mouth could feel like there’s chalk in it, or you might have issues with tasting, speaking, and swallowing. You don’t have the saliva necessary, so you may develop mouth infections and more dental decay.
  • Dry Eyes – Your eyes could itch or burn, but they might feel gritty all the time. Sometimes, this leads to bright light sensitivity or blurry vision.

Other issues can include:

  • Dry skin
  • Joint pain
  • Fatigue
  • Skin rashes
  • Dry cough
  • Dry throat and nasal passages
  • Acid reflux
  • Muscle aches
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Gland swelling in the face and neck
  • Memory problems
  • Poor concentration
  • Muscle weakness
  • Trouble breathing or shortness of breath
