Your First OB Appointment
Your first OB appointment will usually be scheduled for around eight weeks after your last menstrual cycle. A physical exam and urine test will also be done to verify the pregnancy.
You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about your pregnancy. Be sure to come prepared with a list of questions! Some things you might want to ask about include:
- What kind of prenatal care will I need?
- How often will I need to see my OB?
- What are the signs and symptoms of a healthy pregnancy?
- What are the signs and symptoms of a problematic pregnancy?
- What kind of interventions are available if there are problems with my pregnancy?
- How can I best take care of myself during pregnancy?
- What can I do to prepare for labor and delivery?
- Who will be present during my delivery?
At your first visit, you will also have the opportunity to schedule your next appointment and sign up for any additional services that might be required or recommended during your pregnancy.
These services offered by obstetrics in Sacramentosuch as those at the California Birth Center might include genetic counseling, ultrasound appointments, or Lamaze classes. The staff will be happy to answer any questions you might have about these services.
Prenatal Care Basics
Prenatal care is essential for a healthy pregnancy. Good prenatal care includes regular check-ups with your OB, getting enough rest, taking prenatal vitamins, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy diet.
You should also avoid harmful substances such as tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. If you have any chronic health conditions such as diabetes or hypertension, be sure to follow your doctor’s recommendations for managing those conditions during pregnancy.
Your regular OB appointments will usually be scheduled every four weeks until you reach twenty-eight weeks gestation. Next, you should be returning every two weeks until week thirty-six, then weekly until your baby is born.
These appointments provide an opportunity for you and your doctor to check in on the progress of your pregnancy and address any concerns you might have.
