What is refractive eye surgery?
A refractive error is a common condition in which a person’s eyes don’t bend light correctly, so the image is blurred. In astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia, the problem is due to a misshapen cornea. In presbyopia, the problem is an abnormally stiff lens that makes it harder for the patient to read or see things up close.

Refractive eye surgery thus describes the various procedures used to correct refractive errors and improve vision. LASIK is the best-known example. In LASIK, the ophthalmologist will use an excimer laser that produces a thin beam of ultra-violet light that painlessly and precisely removes corneal tissue several millionths of an inch wide from the eye. The doctor thus reshapes the cornea to improve the patient’s vision.

LASIK can be bladed or bladeless. In bladed Photorefractive KeratectomyLASIK surgery, the doctor will use a special scalpel called a microkeratome to cut a flap in the surface of the cornea to reach the tissue underneath. In bladeless LASIK surgery, also called IntraLase, the surgeon will use a femtosecond laser to make the flap.

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is another procedure used to reshape the cornea. It is similar to LASIK, but the surgeon doesn’t make any flaps in the cornea. Instead, they use an excimer laser to remove epithelial cells from the cornea’s surface and then reshape the cornea. The surgeon will then pace a contact lens over the eye to protect it while the epithelial cells grow back.
